Wanna be a J-Pop Babydaddy?

Here’s one for the weird files. Stomp posts that Japanese girl group AKB48 have a website where fans can upload their pictures. For a fee they can choose a member of AKB48 (which has 48 members), and the website produces a Photoshopped picture of what their baby would look like.

Yes, an online baby creator.

The Odd World of Kim Jong Il

I’ve been on a silly news kick lately. I have a new site that is great for news and entertainment, Metro Zimbabwe. One of their writers posted a list of strange acts committed by North Korea’s little dictator. Some of these on the list may be old news to use North Korea watchers. They’re timeless in their amusement, nonetheless.

Kim planned to solve North Korea’s famine by breeding giant rabbits

Strange Facebook Crimes

Shanghaiist (yeah, I really like their site) has posted an amusing time killer on odd arrests related to Facebook.

“People have actually gone to jail because of things they do on Facebook.”

China’s Confucius “Peace” Prize

Shanghaiist reports that this year’s nominees for its peace prize, which include (get ready for it) Vladimir Putin. Bill Gates and Angela Merkel are on the list. Merkel is on to “remind her to pay attention to Eastern values.”

I don’t think subtlety is one of them.

Korean Pilot Banned in China

A strange incident of “he said, he said,” occurred over Chinese airspace as two planes were trying to land. A plane from Qatar that was low on fuel was told to land first, but another plane bumped in front of it in line against orders from air traffic control. But Shanghaiist reports there’s more to this story…

Chinese “Kung Fu Panda” Rip-off

Fan Huang at Shanghaiist showcases a new Chinese animated film, “Legend of a Rabbit,” featuring a rotund rabbit who cooks and does Kung Fu. Funnily enough, the main villain is–a panda!

Maybe they were responding to Chinese criticism of “Kung Fu Panda” about Hollywood’s inaccurate portrayal of Chinese culture and wanted to do a culturally correct version. Huang comments that they may have unintentionally done so.

They most represent contemporary Chinese culture in that they’ve taken something already successful and simply concocted an uninspired knock-off version of the original, all the while underestimating their audience’s ability to sniff the difference.

Fox News Responds to Misinformation Study with Misinformation

Brian Stelter at Media Decoder reported on a study from the University of Maryland’s WorldPublicOpinion.org on how misinformed news consumers were when concentrating on just one news source. Even though it found that consumers of MSNBC and public broadcasting were also misinformed about some topics, viewers of Fox News were drastically more misinformed.

When asked to comment on this finding, Fox News senior vice president of news editorial Michael Clemente said, “‘The latest Princeton Review ranked the University of Maryland among the top schools for having “Students Who Study The Least” and being the “Best Party School” – given these fine academic distinctions, we’ll regard the study with the same level of veracity it was “researched” with.’”

Stelter oh so subtly points out that Clemente was spreading even more misinformation in that statement. Princeton Review has placed the University of Maryland as one of the best northeastern universities, and it is not the “Best Party School,” ranking at #19.

You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

It’s frustrating that citizen journalists get the bad rap for accuracy when the guy who oversees objective news programming at Fox carelessly throws around such arrogantly inaccurate quips.
